After a long talk with my Croatian friend, whose family immigrated to Canada at the early 1900, he showed me a box of photographs, depicting important moments of life in industrial Hamilton, where most of his family photos were taken. I started to work with these amazing pictures and realized I just found an excellent tool to talk about my own immigrant life. I just felt like a writer who is talking in her own voice but uses the vast experience of others before her.
I interested to show the cultural fragmentation which comes from the mixing of old and new world, making up moments of life with posing on pictures with nice hairdo and new clothes, lavish weddings, folk dance, music and half forgotten patterns of handwork. All of those, in a half rendered, half chaotic order is present at the Camouflage 3, in a collage form. Also contains natural elements, the representation of big threes at the Botanical Gardens, place for idyllic outings for steelworkers of Barton Street.
During my 25 years in Canada my nationality and ethnicity seems to faded to give a place to other ideas and more universal approaches, like conservation of our biological environment for every living communities. I feel we are all connected, without highly organized collective effort our place wont survive, our individual, ethnic and national troubles will be greatly override by the basic biological survival.
